Nokia 7.1 test, the surprising mid-range

Comments Off on Nokia 7.1 test, the surprising mid-range

I had the chance to test the Nokia 7.1 several days before its release, to return it in all directions and to talk to you as soon as possible.

I offered you a few days ago an article of presentation, and a photo album captured with the Nokia 7.1.

The least we can say is that it is very surprising, both in terms of overall quality and its design because it has a very long screen.

Unpacking the phone

The Nokia 7.1 comes in a very "Connecting People" box. Indeed, on the front of the box we see not 2, but 7 hands meet.

In the back, the general features and a product photo of face, back and profile. We immediately notice the impressive size of the screen, which, I think, was less obvious on the picture at the front of the box.

Inside the phone is perfectly protected …

It also includes the instructions, the charger, the detachable USB cable, the hands-free kit:

The finishes are beautiful, everything is perfectly placed!

At the back of the phone are the cameras, the flash and the fingerprint sensor.

On the side, the latch button and the volume knob, which stand out enough to be felt quickly.

The screen is very bright and I must admit that it is very nice to see the screen so close to the edges although it is unsettling at first sight to see a screen so close to that of the iPhone X! ^^

Aspect, design, finishes

As you can see in the pictures of Nokia 7.1, the phone is beautiful and has beautiful finishes. The grip is strange the first few days, because the format of the screen changes a little of what we are used to, but it is done very quickly. I loved the fingerprint sensor on the back, which allows you to unlock the phone as soon as you put your finger on it. It's very responsive, and well placed!

The screen has very beautiful colors, and it is super bright. The buttons are well placed, they come out enough to be supported easily, but not too much to remain discreet.

The camera of Nokia 7.1 offers only 12mpx but the sensor is bright enough and the photos are successful day and night.

The landscapes are clear, but it is also the case of the subjects who can be less static like the pigs, or the guinea pigs.

I invite you to look at the original photos to make you an idea, those of the site are compressed (link to the album:

We note some difficulties with strong contrasts and cons-journeys (burned skies), a problem that we often encounter very often on devices in this price range.

Nice surprise however on the night photos which are rather sharp and colorful, without the use of a tripod.

In order to allow you to make your own impression, I invite you to consult my complete album on:

I do not like going into the technical details, because I find that this is absolutely not speaking on a daily basis and it is for me the general feeling that takes precedence over the rest.

I loved the Nokia 7.1, because it is beautiful, it is very well in hand. Unlike what I have seen on other tests, I found for myself that the autonomy of the phone is excellent … because it holds all day with my very intensive use.

The screen is superb, and I happened to hear at the office "wouaouh what's like phone? As this format is surprising, and both the screen is bright and rich in color.

The camera is ok, consistent with what you would expect from a phone of this price range.

In terms of performance, I am satisfied … applications and games run smoothly, although I have had some slowdowns from time to time. I do not know how to explain where it can come from … maybe just the screen format that is not very well supported by Android Oreo or some apps? On Instagram for example, when we open a story, we have time to see that the image is resized before being displayed in full screen (the problem is the same on the Samsung Galaxy S8 which has this format a little elongated) . I admit that this is a problem, and I hope that HMD can fix it quickly with an update because I doubt that it is a material problem (otherwise it would be fairly systematic, but it is not is not the case).

In short I loved:

  • design
  • the screen
  • autonomy
  • the camera for this price range
  • general responsiveness

I least liked :

  • some apps that are not optimized for the screen format
  • slowdowns that are random
